The Opening Up of the Gorge
In the summer of 1901, the Meiringen innkeeper Kaspar Brog acquires the ownership of the Rosenlaui property. He quickly decides to open up the upper section of the wild Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge. Construction begins on October 28, 1901. The building contractor is the Tyrolean, Johann Berti. The undertaking turns out to be more difficult than expected and construction extends far into the summer of 1902. The footpath has to be blasted all the way through the solid limestone rock. 180 packs of dynamite are used to this purpose. The costs amount to the sum of 22,000 francs. The Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge is inaugurated on June 6, 1903.
Expansion
In the winter of 1930/31 Kaspar Brog’s descendants have the gorge path expanded to today’s length. Since then, the walk through the gorge has only been moderately renovated and adapted to modern safety measures. At present, the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge is run by the 4th and 5th generation of members of the Andreas Anderegg-Bürgin family.
Mineral Spring and Hotel
In 1771 the local Andreas von Bergen discovers a mineral spring while cutting wood. He subsequently buys the Rosenlaui Alp and erects a bathing hut and simple accommodation. In the first half of the 19th century, the Rosenlaui Spa experiences its prime. It enjoys a good reputation and has many visitors. All the same, the restaurant business becomes more important than the spa. In the year 1912, nature puts an end to it: earth tremors cause the spa to be almost entirely buried under debris.
The romantic Hotel Rosenlaui is run today by the 2nd generation of the family Andreas and Christine Kehrli-Moser.
